The proof is no more evident than it having set a new record for the fastest lap time of any front-wheel drive performance hatchback, at the world-famous Nürburgring in Germany. Its time was more than 7 seconds faster than the previous Type R. So, buckle up because your pulse is about to hit racing mode.
Honda’s cutting-edge technology has propelled the 2018 Civic Type R to exciting new speeds. The 2.0l VTEC DOHC 16V Direct Injection engine is a high-revving, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine that produces a massive 228kW of power and 400Nm of torque. Exhilaration is guaranteed with 0 to 100 km/h in 5,7 seconds, and a top speed of 270 km/h. It also features Honda’s Earth Dreams technology, making it the perfect blend of thrilling performance and excellent fuel economy.
The key to any heart-pumping driving experience is downforce. Adjustments to various facets of the new Type R’s aerodynamic design, contribute to it being the most dynamic handling version ever. These include a smooth underside for uninterrupted airflow, a front splitter, and a prominent rear wing. All of this results in a best-in-class balance between lift and downforce, and makes for an incredibly stable ride. The exterior makes a bold statement and is designed for superior airflow management with innovative air slats and vortex generating elements.
The Adaptive Damping System has been recalibrated and features new three-chamber damper units that increase the damping variability. This makes for a more refined ride without compromising traction and handling. The system reacts in milliseconds and operates each wheel independently for enhanced road contact even on irregular surfaces.
When you’re going this fast, superior grip is paramount. Keeping you connected to the road are 245/35 R20 tyres on impressive new larger 20-inch Berlina black alloy wheels. It’s a combination that creates an intimidating look that is accentuated by flared wheel arches and carbon fibre-look sill extensions. Built-in pressure monitors feed information to the digital interface in the cabin for instant feedback on the tyres.
Your driving skills get a boost with the addition of rev-matching technology, which has been added to the new 6-speed manual transmission. This prevents unwanted transmission shock due to engine speeds that are too high or low during gear changes. Adding to this is an optimised gear ratio set that further enhances the throttle response, along with a new, single-mass flywheel.
The versatility of the new Type-R is even better with its 3-Mode Drive System (Comfort/Sport/+R). The new ‘Comfort’ mode is perfect for every day driving and provides a much softer ride. Flip the console switch to ‘+R’ mode and a host of adjustments kick in that make it track ready and turn the drive into a much more exhilarating experience.
Sit back and be thrilled. The cabin of the Type R exudes quality and sophistication without losing its motorsport appeal. The new high-backed, signature front sports seats are more comfortable and form hugging, along with being the lightest ever in a Type R. Everything, from the leather-trimmed steering wheel to the carbon fibre inlay to the alloy sport pedals, will keep you in a racing frame of mind.
Driver enlightenment is never far away thanks to the Driver Information Interface (DII). This 7” colour TFT-LCD display in front of the driver, provides all the information you need to track the performance of your Type R: gearshift indicator, boost pressure gauge, G-Meter and lap time recorder to name a few. All of which is controlled by a thumb pad on the multi-function steering wheel.
Safety is always a high priority with the inclusion of various active and passive safety features. Chief among these are 6 front, side and curtain Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbags, which boost the protection for occupants in the event of a collision.
Agile Handling Assist (AHA) is a new function that is programmed into the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) unit. This estimates the driver’s intended steering direction line based on the steering angle and steering speed inputs while cornering. This is then used by the VSA to apply variable brake pressure over the wheel to the inside of the corner, making for smoother turning and improved handling.
LED technology is standard and is featured in the automatic headlights, Daytime Running Lights (DRL’s) and fog lights. The automatic headlights sense environmental lighting and activate when needed depending on the conditions. The DRL’s add to the vehicle’s visibility during the day and also add to its futuristic appearance
To match the incredible power of the engine, the new model features a high performance Brembo brake package, with 9mm larger rear discs and four-piston callipers. This uprated braking system is fully equipped with ABS anti-lock control, electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and emergency brake assist (EBA). Hill Start Assist (HSA) also makes driving off from an incline safer. It’s all about start quickly, stop quickly.
